If you’re like most people, you use Outlook to manage your personal and work email accounts. But if you want to change your primary exchange account, you’ll need to do some research first. There are a few different types of exchange accounts available in Outlook: Microsoft Exchange, Google Exchange, and Yahoo! Exchange. Microsoft Exchange is the most popular type of exchange account because it’s free and easy to use. You can create an account with Microsoft Exchange or Google Exchange within minutes. Yahoo! Exchange is a little more complicated but it’s also free and easy to use. You can create an account with Yahoo! Exchange or GoogleExchange within minutes. If you’re using a Macintosh computer, Yahoo!’s web interface is also available as an option. The best way to find out which exchange account is best for you depends on your needs and preferences. If you’re just starting out, Microsoft Exchange may be the best choice because it’s free and easy to use. But if you have more than one email address or if you need more complex features than what Microsoft Exchange offers, then GoogleExchange may be a better choice for you.

Open Outlook. Tap File Menu. Or select Info. Navigate to Account Settings. On the drop-down menu . Highlight your chosen email address. Select Set as Default

To change your default primary exchange account in Outlook:

  1. Open the Microsoft Exchange folder (usually located under “Mail”)

  2. Right-click on your existing primary exchange account and select Properties from the context menu. The following dialog will appear:

  3. Scroll down to Default Account and click Edit… . This will open the Primary Mailbox dialog with edit fields for both Email and Display Name :

  4. Enter a new address into either field, or both! Click OK when finished editing/deleting addresses, then close/save any remaining open dialogs to apply your changes. If you have selected two email addresses as shown above, clicking “OK” will make them both your primary mailbox in the Microsoft Exchange folder.

  5. Click OK in the Microsoft Exchange Properties dialog to finish.

  6. To verify that your changes have taken effect, open Outlook and double-click on the Microsoft Exchange folder again:

  7. As shown in the screen shot above, the top account should be your primary exchange account. The bottom account is still there but it will not be marked with a blue “P” mark as an active mailbox.

Note: You can use this same technique to select any one of your email accounts as the default, even if you have multiple email addresses for that account. For example, if you have both [email protected] and [email protected] set up in Outlook for your Microsoft Exchange mailbox, but want to make a new personal address ([email protected]) your default inbox when you open Outlook — just go through these steps again and edit/enter in both Gmail accounts!

  1. You can verify that you have successfully selected a new default mailbox by opening another email account (let’s say from the same Microsoft Exchange server) in Outlook:

  2. Click on your primary mailbox and select “View as Normal Mailbox.” This will show you all sub-mailboxes associated with this account. As shown above, if one of those sub mailboxes is marked with a blue “P” as an active mailbox, then Outlook has made that the default mailbox for this account even if it is not your primary address!

  3. You can also verify your default mailbox via Outlook Web Access:

  4. Select the gear icon in the upper right and choose “Mail Settings” (if available), then select an email account from the drop-down box to edit its account profile:

  5. The last item on this page is called “Account Information” which includes a setting for Default Mailbox . As shown above, my primary address was auto-selected as my new default mailbox! If you’d like to disable this auto-select feature, uncheck that option and click Save at the bottom of the dialog.

We set up our email servers so that your primary exchange account becomes your default inbox after making these changes in Outlook/OWA. However, this is not set in stone — if you decide to uncheck the “Make This My Default Mailbox” option on the Microsoft Exchange Properties screen and then click OK, your primary exchange account will be treated as a regular mailbox again.

In other words: it’s up to you! To make sure that auto-select functionality is enabled/disabled for all of your Outlook or OWA mailboxes, please contact us at 800-553-8082 or email [email protected] .
